A Guide On Keeping Urban Chickens
On the heels of a 500 million egg recall in August of 2011, and the implementation of a new federal rule aimed at preventing Salmonella in shell eggs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued several comprehensive reports this last year on egg inspection. With about 600 farms, and over 50,000 laying hens that are subject to the FDA’s new egg safety rule (meaning “targeted” inspection), we opted “out” and started research on keeping our own flock. Truly, we know little about how chickens are raised on poultry farms in the US (aside from alarming documentaries that seem to show more flaws in the system every year), or how eggs are processed and inspections facilitated.
