- John Daetwyler – The Hype Priest
John Daetwyler- Just some guy with a passion for an active lifestyle and cool gear
I'm the father of three very active (maybe even hyperactive) kids that are all under 7 years old. I chase them around in the pool, on the soccer field, on their bikes, from furniture to furniture in the living room, in greenbelts and at the end of the day to their beds. I do this with the help of my awesome wife of 9 years, Jessica. (She might actually say she is raising four kids, but at least I am fully capable of getting myself dressed...sometimes.) I workout at Westlake CrossFit three times per week at 7:15 am. I torture myself through the Workout of the Day. This training has given me the fuel and power to excel at my other passions and has introduced me to some really great people. I'm an avid bike junkie, and I mountain bike at least twice a week. My addiction got so bad once that I even bought into a local bike shop for several years. I still have my first "real" mountain bike, a 1992 GT Tequesta that I got in Anchorage, AK as well as a few others I have picked up along the way.
- Alissa Magrum – Shows leg for ActiveATX
My name is Alissa Magrum. Some may know me as the Executive Director of the local drowning prevention and water safety nonprofit organization, Colin’s Hope. Others may know me as 6 year old Ella’s mom or as their soccer coach. Still others may see me as a competitive (and friendly) age grouper in local triathlons, open water swims, trail runs or bike rides. I would agree with all of those but am also proud to define myself as a charity athlete. Huh? Need me to explain. Ok, basically I believe wholeheartedly in the importance of leading an active lifestyle and will do almost anything to get in my daily workout. That workout is my sanity. It gives me energy. It is a core value. It’s as essential as morning coffee and is NOT negotiable.

After graduating from UT, she embarked upon a two-month backpacking trek through Central America. While traveling, she stayed active by hiking up volcanoes, swimming with sharks, and mountain biking through the jungle. Now back at home, she enjoys swimming laps, hiking through the greenbelt, and having her brothers torture her with Crossfit workouts. If you know of a new workout Owen must try out for her column, please feel free to contact her.

Elizabeth O'Brien - Fitness Enthusiast and LPC
Elizabeth O’Brien, M.A., is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) working in private practice in Austin, TX. A native of Memphis, TN, she and her husband, the photographer Michael O’Brien, moved to Austin in 1993 with their three children from New York City.
Ms. O’Brien was a journalist for many years in South Florida and New York. She sees a strong connection between her two chosen professions: “Both journalism and therapy share a fascination with the human condition,” she says. “And both involve getting someone’s story, albeit with different agendas.”
Ms. O’Brien works with individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues and body image issues. She also does some life coaching/mentoring. She is trained in Trauma First Aid (TFA); and EMDR (Eye Movement De-sensitization and Reprocessing), for treating trauma. Encouraging and modeling a healthy lifestyle—with a focus on fitness and nutrition—is key to her therapeutic work.
- Leslie Canter
My name is Leslie, and I graduated from a small liberal arts college in Claremont, California, called Pitzer. It’s okay, you have probably never heard of it. I studied Philosophy and creative writing, and if that’s not weird enough, I ran for fun. I was a student-athlete, captaining the cross-country and track teams, and serving as Sports Editor for the newspaper serving five consortium colleges. I moved back to Austin in June to dive in to the rich fitness community that we have here. I absolutely love to run, swim, surf, and generally be outside. The friends and the activity keep me happy and sane!
